This morning, Zach filled you in on the details of The Mummy movie as it was made in 1999 by director Stephen Sommers. For my own personal tastes, The Mummy is essentially the real fourth Indiana Jones movie, a swashbuckling adventure with so much heart and humor that I cannot help but adore it.
It could have been SO much different than that.
There’s a Hollywood term known as “Development Hell,” which refers to movies that take years, sometimes even decades, to materialize. The Mummy is one of those movies, with the first iteration of this project being written in 1987, a full 12 years before the movie would be released. So, in honor of the new Chivery 48-Hour Tees based on the 1999 film, let’s talk about all of the versions that never came to pass.
One last thing. ALL of the details in this post come from the amazing article “The Mummy, Resurrected” in the June 1999 issue of Cinefantastique magazine and writer Joe Fordham. It’s an amazing article that includes some photos of make-up tests for unmade versions of the Mummy that we can’t repost here for copyright reasons, so be sure to at least take a glance at it.
