This movie may not be for you, but it sure was for me.
Before truly diving into the gore-soaked darkness of The Outwaters, I need everyone out there to understand that this film is extremely abrasive for many reasons.
First off, it’s a found-footage horror movie, a designation that can be divisive right out of the gate. Additionally, nighttime scenes are mostly lit by a single flashlight, which combined with the found footage camerawork means that it’s truly impossible to tell what’s going on in multiple scenes. Most of all though, the film does not fully explain itself. It explains its initial premise clearly, but once the film’s second half begins, no concrete explanations are offered for what these characters are experiencing.
As far as I’m concerned though, all of those creative decisions actually help The Outwaters and make it one of the first found footage horror movies in many years to burrow directly into the center of my brain.
