Perhaps one of my favorite moments of “How’d they not see that coming?” took place nearly 17 years ago during a BBC broadcast.
Let’s set the stage, for those of you just learning about this iconic moment in music history.
The BBC invited American rock band Rage Against The Machine to perform live during a morning broadcast in December of 2009.
Rage Against The Machine was asked to perform their hit song, “Killing in the Name,” which famously (or perhaps infamously) ends with the repeating lyrics: “Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me.”
The band was politely asked — or perhaps told — to omit that particular lyric in the live performance.
You, your dog, and the rest of the world can probably see where this one is going.
The only people who couldn’t, apparently, were the BBC producers in charge of corralling a band known, primarily, for raging against machines.
