South Park is no stranger to controversy (which is why people still adore the series after 22 seasons) and they just added another name to the laundry list of people they’ve offended: the entire country of China.
Last week’s episode “Band in China” mocked the nation’s blatant suppression and censorship, as well as how American companies like Disney and the NBA bend to its will, too afraid of pissing them off and missing out on that China money. Disney — and increasingly the rest of Hollywood — make their films in accordance with Chinese sensibilities, even if it means sacrificing artistic vision. And just last weekend, the NBA apologized on behalf of the coach of the Houston Rockets after he announced his support for the protests in Hong Kong.
