Evolution is usually explained like it’s some elegant, carefully planned process: traits develop, survival favors the useful ones, and eventually everything makes sense.
Then you meet a platypus, and nothing makes sense.
From mammals that lay eggs to birds that forgot how to fly, fish that disguise themselves as seaweed, and seaweed, and creatures that apparently decided looking absolutely ridiculous was a perfectly reasonable survival strategy, the animal kingdom is full of evolutionary plot twists.
These aren’t mistakes, exactly. They’re the wonderfully weird results of species adapting to very specific problems in very specific ways.
So let’s take a tour through a few that make evolution look less like a master plan and more like a drunk guy trying to set up IKEA furniture.
