I didn’t plan on publicly weeping today, but here I am. And now I’m bringing all of you down with me.
Pixar’s new SparkShorts program just released Kitbull, a heart-rending short film about a stray cat forging an unlikely friendship with an abused pit bull. It makes an important statement on humanity’s often inhumane treatment of animals, and it’s guaranteed to have you blubbering at your desk like a baby. Seriously. I haven’t cried like this since the last time I had sex.
I’ll go so far as to say Kitbull belongs near the top of Pixar’s most tear-jerking moments. Current standings:
1. When Andy gives his toys away at the end of Toy Story 3 — this one will always hit me hardest because I grew up with Toy Story and was the same age as Andy and him giving the toys to the little girl was a metaphor for surrendering youth but also sharing the things he loved about it with the next generation oh my fuck it was perfect.
2. The beginning of Up (very close second)
3. When the grandma finally talks at the end of Coco
4. Kitbull
5. When Sully says goodbye to Boo in Monsters, Inc.
