Chicago’s ‘rat hole’ is gone.
On Wednesday, Chicago city officials removed the portion of sidewalk in which the clear imprint of a rodent can be seen in the dried cement. The North Side neighborhood, Roscoe Village, was the site of ‘rat hole’ for over two decades but didn’t draw attention until recently when a comedian shared a photo of the sidewalk on social media in January.
Since then, people have been flocking to the 1900the block of West Roscoe to see the rat-shaped dent, annoying residents at all hours of the day. Before the removal, some visitors attempted to steal the hole, while one couple even got married at the site, fifty random people bearing witness.
A spokesman for the Chicago Department of Transportation stated that the removal of ‘rat hole’ was a “collaborative decision between city departments” but assured everyone that the infamous slab of sidewalk is in storage. Paul Sajovec, chief of staff to Alderman, Scott Waguespack, is unsure about what they will do with ‘rat hole’ saying, “There’s discussion about what could or should happen with it. It’s a piece of city infrastructure.”
I say put it in a museum, so we can all see that funny little ro-dent.
