Sergeant Stubby
A mixed-breed terrier mutt who became the mascot of the U.S. 102nd Infantry Regiment. Stubby served on the Western Front in 17 battles, where he warned troops of poison gas attacks, located wounded soldiers, and even apprehended a German spy. For capturing an enemy infiltrator, he was “promoted” to the rank of sergeant, becoming the first dog to receive military rank in the U.S. Army. Often called the most decorated American dog of WWI, Stubby received numerous honors (including a wound stripe and a medal from the Humane Society) and was celebrated as a national hero after the war.
