For some reason, it’s believed that if anyone were to view the paintings by Beksiński, they’ll soon die. Given the subject matter, it makes sense. All of his work is macabre, gloomy, sadomasochistic and nightmarish.
Working through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, he was living in Warsaw, Poland with his wife and son, when the curse began. His wife died of cancer in 1998. A year later, his son who had a bright career as a translator and music journalist, committed suicide. Then, in 2005 the painter was stabbed to death by the 19-year-old son of his cleaning lady.
From then on, a legendary curse was born. Though it didn’t stop the city of Sanok, Poland from opening a gallery in his name in an old castle, to exhibit his paintings. Just beware.
