In most professional sports, players are just faces in a uniform, and don’t really stand out from a distance (that’s why we have jersey numbers).
Hockey goalies are the exception to that rule.
Since they started wearing masks back in the 60s (they played without ’em for decades before that), goalies have been given a sort of carte blance when it comes to design.
Some opt for something simple like the team’s logo or a symbol of the city they represent. Others, though, fill the canvas of their faceguard with imagery intended to strike fear into their opponents’ hearts.
