Few things in life beat cracking open a cold one with the boys.
Even fewer things beat doing it in a basement that somebody built specifically for that purpose.
When I was a kid, I’d spend a lot of time at my grandparents’ house. And while my grandmother made the main floor of the duplex very cozy and wholesome, the basement was my grandfather’s domain.
And like many men of his generation, he turned it into his own (fully functional) personal tavern.
I remember sneaking down there, eyes wide, just staring at all the bottles and knick-knacks lined up on the shelves. While his homemade wine fermented in the cold room, he’d sometimes pour me a tiny splash and tell stories I probably wasn’t supposed to hear.
It felt like the coolest secret spot in the world.
But basement bars come in all shapes and sizes. From wood-panelled wonderlands frozen somewhere in the 1970s to sleek setups that wouldn’t look out of place in a downtown cocktail bar, there’s no shortage of ways to make it a night out without leaving the house.
Let’s venture downstairs and see what’s on tap.
