We killed animals by chasing them until they died of exhaustion
Our opposable thumbs and sophisticated brains get all the credit, but there was another unique human trait that allowed us to dominate every other species on earth: Long distance running.
Most of the animals we ate were much faster than us. But none of them could run for miles and miles without stopping like we could, and our pace was fast enough to keep up. We used this unmatchable skill to our advantage.
Before the invention of weapons, humans killed animals through “persistence hunting.” We would separate an animal from its pack and chase after it until it keeled over from exhaustion. Then, dinner time.
