Halloween is genuinely one of my favorite times of the year, and a night I look forward to always. But even as beloved a holiday as Halloween can be, sometimes it goes to Hell in a handbag.
I’ll start with a true story about myself that I will never live down. I used to dress up as the Grim Reaper every year when I was young. Don’t ask me, I just thought it was the coolest. Well before heading out to trick-or-treat that night, I was all in skeleton makeup and donning my black cape when I told the folks I was going to take my cousin out for a quick drive on the family go-kart. I got halfway down the block feeling cool as Hell until out of nowhere I was jerked back in the seat so hard I felt like I was choking.
You might’ve guessed what happened. My damn cape was flying back in the wind and it got stuck in the back tire choking me out so hard that I could no longer reach the pedals to break. My cousin managed to bring us to a stop and I was balling my eyes out.
I was crushed, but my dad on the other hand thought it was hilarious and he took a photo of me immediately following the disastrous moment. You could see makeup streaming down my face in tears, and that photo was later framed and now still hangs on the walls of my home back in Indiana.
Gotta love family. Happy Halloween, indeed.
