The Art of Scott Gustafson
We grew up believing fairy tales were wholesome little morality plays where woodland creatures helped you clean the house and everyone eventually got married.
That was adorable.
Before Disney got involved, fairy tales were considerably less interested in protecting children’s delicate sensibilities and considerably more interested in teaching them important life lessons likeĀ ādon’t trust strangers,ā āyour parents might abandon you in the woods,ā and āsometimes the punishment for being annoying is losing a body part.ā
These are the older, darker, weirder versions of familiar fairy talesāthe ones that existed before talking teapots, catchy musical numbers and conveniently marketable princesses got involved.
Basically,Ā Grimm’s Fairy Tales were less “happily ever after” and more “well, that escalated quickly.”
