The song, “Midnight Train to Georgia,” was inspired by Fawcett and her (then) boyfriend, Lee Majors.
Songwriter, Jim Weatherly, was on a flag football team with Majors (who was dating Fawcett at the time – they eventually married). Weatherly called Majors at his L.A. home, but Fawcett answered the phone. During the call, she told Weatherly that she was taking the midnight plane to Houston to visit her family, and, after hanging up, Weatherly sat down and wrote “Midnight Plane to Houston,” which would eventually become “Midnight Train to Georgia” after some tweaking by Gladys Knight and the Pips.
Wild.
