So, there’s one detail to this story that I feel the need to explain up front.
There’s an online service called Zelle. It’s similar to services like Venmo that allow you to transfer money directly from peer-to-peer through an app, but Zelle’s reputation is… Not great (they insist that it’s meant to be used “with family and friends”). Zelle has been pretty lax on cracking down on scammers who use the platform, which has made it a favorite app of scammers.
