Urban legends have a remarkable talent for taking something mildly weird and turning it into a full blown nightmare.
A strangle light in the sky becomes a UFO. A blurry shape in the woods becomes Bigfoot. A weird noise in the sewer becomes a 12 ft albino alligator. Give the internet a grainy photograph, three eyewitnesses, and absolutely no additional information, and suddenly we’re dealing with a government cover up.
But sometimes, somebody actually checks.
And that’s when the story gets even better.
Because behind some of the creepiest legends are explanations that are surprisingly normal, wildly misunderstood, or somehow even stranger than the original story. From phantom ships to sewer gators to exploding stomachs, killers in the backseat, creepy crawlies coming up your pipes and more, these are the urban legends where the truth turns out to be considerably less supernatural – and occassionally much more ridiculous.
