First, let me note that our discourse in America, especially online, has become more coarse. Hate speech isn’t just normalized—it’s being promoted.
Last week, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta would end fact-checking across its platforms and loosen hate speech protocols. Moderation on Facebook is essentially being shown the door. What Zuckerberg calls “more speech and fewer mistakes” is really just “less moderation and more food fights in the comments.”
They want us to fight because polarization is incredibly profitable.
