The Strange Sight at Meppen
At first glance, the massive, camouflaged machine sitting on the artillery range near Meppen, Germany, looks like a piece of sci-fi military hardware, part cannon, part radar dish. Visitors might wonder: is it real artillery, or maybe even a decoy designed to draw enemy fire away from legitimate targets? The answer is far more fascinating. Officially located at the WTD 91 testing range in Lower Saxony, this peculiar piece of equipment is what the German military calls a Schalldämpfer, a giant silencer designed to muffle the deafening blasts of large-caliber artillery.
