The Soft Rock Bands That Went the Hardest With Their Logos
intro
Smooth, laid-back, soft rock bands from the 1970s and 1980s — also known as the practioners of the “yacht rock” sound — were almost categorically nerdy guys with mustaches and weird glasses.
Visually as well as musically, yachty bands served as an alternative for aging Boomers who’d tired of golden god rockers like Robert Plant and Mick Jagger.
The one place where the soft rock bands could compete: logos. Before MTV and social media, musicians didn’t have many branding opportunities, so their logo had to say a lot.
And these dudes went all out, adopting logos that were forceful, impactful… and the kind of thing that suggests hard-partying party band, or “psychedelic band,” or heavy metal, and not, like the Eagles.
Here then are the bands whose music was sensitive but whose logos, typefacts, and album sleeves totally rocked.
