The voice behind the cartoon characters (16 photos)

  • Christopher Neufeldt

Mel Blac win's in the most characters by a single person department.

    • ranD

not to mention how different they all are. a lot of the characters sort of sound similar with the others.

    • I am so mad bro

Mel Blanc wins in the mustache department

    • Grammar Ninja

Mel Blanc was a G.D. genius.

    • zym

      Mel Blanc just wins.

    • crazydog

mel blanc was the man. looney tunes are still the standard.

    • ...........

      Wow…thanks for that.

    • LocoLobo

Mel Blanc rocked, but Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer win hands down in "most voices" – over a hundred each.

      • Rion

There is a reason why Mel Blanc was known as the man with a thousand voices ya know.

    • Brian Bottorff

      Frank Welker begs to differ.

  • Jack

  • Pablo

  • Ferb

    #6 winner

    • Firefighter23

      He is the Looney Tunes.

    • Del

      Ya, he's the shit.

  • KyleGamgee

GEEZ #15 Billy West. Talk about prolific!

    • ranD

kinda resembles Roger too doesn't he??

    • steve

doug funnie and fry? mind blown.

    • daveh873

      Billy West is the MAN

    • Joel McWaters

Billy West's best voice was The Jackie Puppet.

    • King Rooster

Lets not forget that Billy West is also BATMAN! lol.

  • DistractedIndividual

Amazing how people can stretch their voices for so many different characters 😀

    • giggidy

      you said blown.

      • HHHHHH

        now say SWALLOW.

  • Lowrent75

Very cool…most I knew them from one character but to see all of the other voices is kinda awesome.

  • ontherun1989

#6 Mel Blanc could voice an entire episode of Looney Tunes all on his own. Awesome.

    • ranD

and all with different speech impediments. lol

    • TRUTH

      … he often did!

    • Daniel Angelo Monaco

Actually most of the episodes are all Blanc. Almost all of the Sylvester/Tweety or Sylvester/Speedy episodes only had Blanc listed in the cast credits. In fact when Mel Blanc died they had to cast an entire staff of voice actors to replace him. What's funny to me is that His Sylvester and Daffy sound kind of similar and yet you never realize it's the same guy because he gives the characters complete lives of their own. Legend.

  • engrishresson

Tom Kenny also did Starscream in Transformers Animated. Geeze I'm a nerd…

    • Brad Gjersvig

Nice. His best work is still Binky in Shakes the Clown IMO.

      • McBeastie

I loved Tom Kenny on Mr. Show.

    • Jon M.

Tom Kenny deserves like a dozen more characters, at least, including MODOK (Super Hero Squad), Iron Man (Super Hero Squad), Ice King (Adventure Time), and Plastic Man (Batman: The Brave and the Bold) to name a few.

I also find that Richard Horvitz and Dana Snyder are honorable mentions for this article.

  • RolfFunk

#13 Remember when these shows were funny?

    • Anthony

He can make your mom laugh

    • try again

      family guy still funny dude.

      • Fasteddy14

Too many show tunes… And the "recall" style of comedy ceases to be funny after using it so many times.

          those goddamn show tunes

    • Dipper

      Be nice his moms dead

    • McBeastie

I don't remember a time when American Dad was ever funny.

      • Mr. Capita

        South Park FTW

      • ...........

        your an idiot. simply put.

        • Stupid Hurts

      • nope

I guarantee you've never watched one episode of American Dad. You've heard everyone else bash it (for the same ignorant reason) and regurgitated it, which, unfortunately is the reason it doesn't get very good ratings.

    • Poopeye

      I agree. These show's sucks.

      • schango

        Your grammar sucks.

    • thom

      No. No I don't remember.

    • kafizzle

when they where funny they still are funny and there going to be for ever in my mind

  • chris

    What, no Frank Welker?!?

Well, I guess he could get an update all to himself.

    • Anthony

No Peter Cullen either, because well…Optimus Prime. Also, looks like they took Matt Stone's picture out of his high school year book, where he resembled Chris O'Donnel

    • Kaars

No Frank Welker is kind of ridiculous… He's voiced over 800 characters in his career.

      -Megatron (and many other Transformers)
      -Fred (Scooby Doo)
      -Fred Flintstone
      -Many GI Joes

      • Eric

Peter Cullen has done FAR more than just Optimus Prime and Transformers:
Welker's movies alone have grossed over $12.3 Billion worldwide.
another addition that would be fun include: John Ratzenberger

      • Chris Hood

Dude, I instantly thought "Meanwhile, at the Legion of Doom. . ." after reading your post! good times

      • miliano2.0

As well as any animal in animation and live action (that is if the animal they had didn't make much noise, he would step in).

  • crolb

why is hank azaria on this list

    • newscot

You mean why *isn't* he on this list?
And I agree – he definitely should be.

      • anon

        definitely should be on it

    • ZachBob

why was walt disney? everybody knows he was mickey's voice.

  • MonkeyMadness

    #8 I love all of Frank's voices

  • NothingToSeeHere

Fun list! Mark Hamil and Clancy Brown would have been good additions.

  • Jim

#8 voices of Yoda and Cookie Monster are from the same guy?! that is so awesome

    • top dog

I didn't know that either. I knew Frank Oz did Yoda, but I didn't know he also did Cookie Monster.

  • Caleb

    Where's Tara Strong?

    • Dave Gal

I agree. She has an incredible list of voice characters.

  • chris

what about hank azaria? hes done so many different charactors on the simpsons alone

  • graham

    bart simpsons a girl!

    • thrillho

You just figuring that out now?

    • kyoshizen

Bart Simpson is a boy, who happens to be voiced by a girl. Get it straight.

  • Kotaro

People who would do good on the list:
Harry Shearer and Hank Azaria for the huge Simpsons cred
Mark Hamill for pretty much every super hero cartoon/game in the past 20 years
Phil LaMarr for about a hundred secondary characters

That's off the top of my head, I' sure there are other heavy hitters.

    • Zoey

      I totally agree.
Harry and Hank probably have the widest range of Simpson's characters out of any of them
Mark is unbelievable too! He NEVER does Luke, but in Robot Chicken Star Wars, he did Luke! (I haven't seen 2 and 3 yet, but I hope he's there too!). My favourite of his was the Joker's laugh from Batman animated series (I have ALL seasons and movies on DVD, and even the soundtrack from Mask of the Phantasm) (perhaps I've over-played my geek hand, and should shut up now)

    • Beth Kiser

This list is invalid without these people.

      • SharkyShooter

    • 6655321

And Maurice LaMarche, he's the modern day Mel Blanc.

  • macrda

    • nick

no one cares man. this is what us chivers calls a fail and a failure to the race of humanity. EAD you terrible human being.

  • BSmike

#16 is that Matt Stone's high school photo?

    • thrillho

Nope….i think he had a huge jew-fro in HS

    • Fasteddy14

The jew-fro always reminded me of side-show bob from Simpsons. He could actually be a leading actor without it.

  • Rocks Off

#9 Was also the voice of Ma Beagle and Magica DeSpell on Duck Tales.

  • unimpressed

    cool story bro

    • R.Pgh

      very original wordplay, bro

  • jaynecobb

and the voice of Cleveland Brown is a white guy

    • ...........

what's your point? you need to be black in order to be the voice of a black cartoon character?
      Sounds very revealing.

  • Jeeesh

Chicago meet up post why u no happen? Missing beginning of lunch to look at Hardees ad is like the typical tranny post I get tricked by

    • Joe Meade

haha i feel the same way!!
