Not Cool, Best Buy (1 Photo)

best buy what Not Cool, Best Buy (1 Photo)

As hurricane Irene bears down on the Jersey Shore, the Best Buy in Howell, NJ has taken it upon themselves sell cases of Dasani water for $40.56. One of the DJs for New Jersey 101.5 just sent this photo to theCHIVE.

At a time when it’s so important for these seaside communities to come together to help each other out (maybe even lower the price on water, eh), it’s disappointing to see a massive corporation like Best Buy not only assume zero social responsibility, but also go the extra mile to make a buck by selling bulk cases of water at the single bottle price during an emergency.

So I put it to you, Chivers. Is this ethical?

UPDATE: I just called Best Buy and spoke to one employee and a manager to confirm the photo. Both refused to answer my questions and told me I had to call corporate offices. My response was, ‘All you have to do is deny that you are doing this. It’s that simple.’
Neither party denied it. Instead I was rudely directed to corporate and then they hung up on me.

UPDATE #2: The manager of the Best Buy has responded and said, “… Sunday August 28th 2011, we will (be) price matching any local supermarket’s price for cases of water if they are needed for one day only as a gesture of good will.”

Please see Milton Friedman on youtube. Greed is Good.

  2. I have had nothing but trouble with Best Buy. They are the epitome of the evil, money-grubbing corporation. I stopped shopping there in 2005 and I've never missed them. If you hate Best Buy too, then refuse to shop in their stores on their website, and tell people that whenever the topic comes up.

Has anybody purchased Fiji water? Know why it is so expensive? Because they have to transport it from freakin Fiji!!! It costs to ship water. If NJ's local bottled water supply was exhausted, they would have had to transport it from elsewhere. Shipping costs will go up incrementally per unit sold…

Not saying that is what happened here. They were most likely being d i c k s…

Not saying it is right…. but $40.56/24 = $1.69 per bottle and 23.88/12 = @1.99. They were charging their 'drinks in the cooler' price. So they always sell a case of water for this inflated price.

btw, I cannot stand Best Buy.

A few stores ripping people off won't pay for one day of the branch manager's salary, however, the sacrifice is human decency. If I could find the person who made this executive decision, I'd beat the living shit out of him.

I live close to this store, cant say it doesnt surprise me. Best buy as a whole corporation sucks donkey dick. This is just another reason why NOT to go anywhere near that store.

if you get pissed off at this, you fail at economics. Srsly ppl, supply and demand, econ 101. If water was cheap, then the first motherfucker to walk in buys all of it, and theres none left for the rest who need it,. use your goddamned heads assholes

Then they could open the pack and sell 24 individual bottles To hopefully spread the opportunity if that’s your argument.

don't blame best buy. many comapnies, including home depot who sell water by the bottle were not able to sell it by the case. If someone wanted to purchase the entire case they had to do so by purchaising each bottle at it's retail price. Thus, the cases of water became very expensive. Orders came from distributors and not the stores themselves…

  12. best buy employee says:

all they did was multiply the retail price that it would cost you to buy one of those bottles by how many were in the case. if you are to buy one bottle of dasani there it is 1.69 and the smartwater is 1.99 per bottle. don't be mad at them. you people are the ones willing to pay that much per bottle on any normal day!

  13. Bob Bilrow says:

Demand rises, price rises. Derp. Higher prices prevent shortages so there is water there.

    MSRP!?

    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
