Build a cool house for less than $5,000 (17 photos)

This little forest bungalow was built by Simon Dale his family in Wales. He built it with his father-in-law for less than $5,000 using resources found in the surrounding forest and very little pre-cut wood and other fixtures. He was moved into the house within 4 month of starting the build.

not bad. I would live there.

    • Jak

Was he lost in the woods and this is his ode to Mitch Hedberg?

      • Old Man Rivers

I was lost, but now I live here!

      • Catalystika

Heh, I'm really fighting the urge to start quoting Mitch here… so much good stuff. Taken way too soon.

    • Broseph Stalin

"not bad"?! Shit's amazing! Must be nice to be that handy…

  • Catalystika

Wow… Henry David Thoreau would be impressed!

    • Anon

Too fancy for Thoreau. These are Bilbo digs.

      • thescone

Thoreau ate meals at his mothers nightly and had servants wash his clothes, he live like literally half a mile from his mansion. I dont think very much was too fancy for Thoreau

  • AssClown

#15 Smokey The Bear better keep his shit together or that house is fucked.

    • Iam_Dave

Yep. No smoking allowed, not even weed.

    • 6655321

Right, because any other house made from wood would be fine.

  • Bogus_Shizzall

    Great if you're a hobbit.

  • ad3

    Like a hobbit!

  • MrMagicFingers

Took their inspiration from LOTR i presume?

    • MrMagicButtPimples

      Lord of the Rim Jobs?

      Gross dude.

      • The Chivery

Don't judge. Us Chivers can't help what we're into.

        Chive on!

    • MrMagicTongue

yes every single thing that is built from wood and has grass going over the roof making it look sunk into the ground is insipred from lotr.

      • a BiPolar Guy

        they are too! Nyahh!

  • Zedhere

See what you can do without silly things like zoning laws, building codes, and permits.

    • Zed is Retarded

Zoning laws, building codes, and permits are necessary all over the world. Without them, you have retards building houses like this. This is crap for hippies and hippies are losers.

      • fun police

        wow, laid much?

      • MacNCheesePro

Well, in desperate times, where people are losing their houses to the "king's land taxes" (at least in MD) and shitty economy, I'm not surprised someone would do this.

        • http://www.facebook.com/FlibseyEmma Emma Oliver

FFS get your facts right. this was built on his father in law's land, he HAD planning permission to build this ONLY because he's employed by said father in law as a woodsman/forrester, someone who takes care of the woodland and uses the wood to make things which he then sells to give himself an income. the house has a convenant on it stating that if he wishes to leave, or dies, the house must be demolished.

          • Good ol' Chap

            Um, OK?

          • Stan_Dalone

anytime you can build your own house that's a good thing

            • Ha.Ha.

              die

          • Stained shorts

            Yeah, what she said!

          • some bloke

Thanks! I was just about to ask how he was able to do this – most govts would tear it down for not complying with some building code (and being cheap, healthy, sustainable, environmentally friendly etc – in other words, a threat to the vested interests!)

            • Andy

Zoning Laws are only in cities, if you buy rural land that's not within any cities and there's no county ordinances standing in the way you can do whatever the hell you want. My cousin built a garage out of lumber he cut himself, it was a little less primitive than this though

          • MacNCheesePro

Yup! I got all that from looking at the pictures. Not sure what your rebuttal has to do with my comment.

          • hippyh8r

            Emma, you are a chode.

  • Musabi

Didn't some guy pay hundreds of thousands to build a hobbit hole? I bet he feels stupid now!

  • XOS2

    very impressive

    • XOS2 is dumb

      No, not really.

  • Selmy

If you place value on the time invested, I'm sure it cost far far more than $5,000.

    • http://twitter.com/sterlingsylvir @sterlingsylvir

      Someone is an accountant…

      • Jacob

depends how good of a job he could have gotten otherwise. Opportunity cost my friend.

    • TomTheCameraGuy

I know my salary for 4 months didn't pay off my house…

    • H_something

Ones free time is worth 1.5 times his salary. Just a little note to all of you parents that stand around while your kids beg for money in front of shops.

      • DIYer

Rich people are always claiming this 1.5x free time value. When I replaced my heater core on my car it cost me 2 hours of work time plus 12 hours of free time, as opposed to almost 80 hours of work time for the shop to do it. I kept 78 hours of time that was paid into my bank account, but the 1.5x logic says that I actually came out behind.

        • H_something

Factor how much money you could have made if you put aside 18 hours worth of pay. Now, how much would it have cost you to pay to get it fixed? If you made more then what it would have cost to have it fixed you were wasting your time. If fixing it yourself was cheaper then you did the right thing. I was agreeing that spending four months and $5k to gain a home was worth it. And by the way, I am by no means rich. Just smart enough to know what my free time is worth.

  • Htisss

Nice…but it seems that he did not set the foundation. Let's see if in a couple of years the house is still standing.

    • Verbal_Kint

it may still be standing, but in a different place. Like 50 yards down the hill…

      • Dick Salad

Still not as nice as good ol' Mexican construction. Put a pool on top and I'll be impressed…

    • phydor

the "plans" make it look like water will run down the hill, right into the house. cool for playtime, probably not cool for extended living

      • JAFitC

Not so. Look at the upslope view of #3. He uses a Pervex membrane to block the water and what he terms a land drain to direct it away from the foundation.

    • Solitaire

I live in a 115 year old house built on sand with no foundation that todays engineers would deem "safe". (Its not falling down any time soon)

  • Makes you think...

Wonder if he used the money he saved to throw a kick ass house party?

    • Patricio

Why does everything come back to this?

  • Maik

Next week…….."Walk into Mordor with less than $3,000"

    • hippyh8r

One does not simply walk into Mordor with less than $3,000.

  • Lia

Cool, yeah…but a bit too labor intensive from a mere mortal. Maybe Gandalf stopped by to help? 😉

  • Flymolo

God damn, that is cool as hell.

  • Dax

set, what do you mean the foundation will set? Oh Sh!t…

  • Screwdriver

At least with the big hole in the roof you will know for sure when it is raining outside…..But still a damn cool house.
