Old gaming VS. new gaming: Which do you prefer? (10 Photos)

  • Mike

Old for sure… don't make them like they use to.

I say old for the storyline and the simplicity, but new is good too cause it just looks awesome and you can play with friends in most. old still wins out though…

    • Your choice

Here's a question for ya. If I peed in a bucket today would you rather drink that or from the bucket that has sat for 25 years in the outhouse at my grandparents ranch? HHHmmmm??

      • Frank

The 25 year old pee. It wouldn't be pee anymore.

    • Dirty Dingus

How about 'games before we all had internet' and games after. I spent many a day playing mario & Zelda but that was before the internet was available to me.

Now I have three kids and my PS1 hasn't been out of storage for years.

    • Dan

There's a reason why they don't make them like that anymore.

I love the new games today don't get me wrong, but the old school games hold the most love for me.

You know how people say "You're always chasing that first high"?
well, that's how it is for me, nothing they can come out with today can bring that joy that playing Video Games for the first times brought<3

        • libtech21

Play dark souls and then tell me that

I think I speak for a large number on this, but since when is it cool to love the originals more than the improvements? I understand nostalgia, and believe me, I love playing some of the games I played as a kid here and there, but to actually say they can never make anything to top what was…? The games were difficult then and a few still may be now… but they weren't by any messure more dynamic and fun than games by todays standards. They were just as repetitive then as many are today. THe principles are all the same. Again, i just dont understand why anyone has to make it a point to prove how old you are or how retro your facade is. The newer games… at least 97% of them… (made up figure of course, but you get my point) are obviously better. It is absolutely the near exact same thing as saying you would prefer a cell phone from 1994… than lets say the new iPhone. Let's be real here…

Dark Souls and Demon Souls. Hardest fucking games ever made ;D lol

        • NJF

Nah, difficult in the beginning. I think people are just earlier quitters.

      • Guest

Sorry, but I'll take an original Corvette, or one from the 60s, over most of the modern ones. Same with the original Mustangs. Sure the newer ones would eat them alive in performance, but the classic ones have so much more style.

  • that guy

    both…gaming is good times always

    • Jive

      This answer wins!

    • MAX_POW

exactly… i am 38 years old and i've been a "gamer" (not very good) since i was 8, always updating myself, from the Atari until the x-box 360 kinect. Fun never stops man!

    • da2conan

      Still, Goldeneye all day #3

    • MattKL

Totally. I've been a gamer ever since the NES, and there are good things in both old-school and new-school gaming.

    • Cody

right on homie. way to have the true logical answer.

      • MikeOverHere

    • troller

in all actuality it looks a little more like 3rd…..

  • BaseballRube

#3 GoldenEye for the N64 will forever be the ultimate game (for me).

But I feel each has their own place, in the end I prefer the older style for nostalgic reasons.

BTW, there is an updated GoldenEye for the Wii, which is not bad, but still does not match up in the end.

    • Mr. H

true…there's a timeline somewhere in which life is regarded as Before Golden Eye and After Golden Eye…

    • charlie

      Goldeneye FTW!

    • Mmmkay

Who is the jerk off the compared the legend of GoldenEye 64 to something as mediocre as Halo anyway?

    • Gordon

GoldenEye Reloaded is coming out on Xbox 360 and PS3 soon too.

    • agentshags

Perfect Dark for the 64 was better than Golden Eye! And some of these games you are comparing don't really work that great… but good to see GAMES! 🙂

  • bud

new school all the way. except for golden eye and mortal kombat

  • kidn

    boats and hoes

  • Shadrock7

    Tecmo Super Bowl, FTW!

    • chodanutz

    • Brad

    • Steven

FYI, you can play Tecmo Super Bowl online. Just go google it. Still great!

  • Byrne0ut

I gotta go with the old school, the new games are pretty but the old school games were and still are tough to beat

    • EYErishprEYEd

I guess you're not playing Dark Souls, then. I've almost thrown my controller through the screen on multiple occasions.

      • Byrne0ut

Im not playing it, but I have broken several PS3 controllers over the years, gets expensive to keep replacing them.

  • AssClown

Depend whether you prefer good graphics, good gameplay or good storylines. Most games today has shitty storylines but amazing graphics (Crysis). Much like movies. And visa versa. Obviously it's not always the case, but most of the time it is.

Diablo 3 for instance (gonna be the best game of all time, fuck the argument about comparing different genre games). Compared to today's standards of graphics, it's not nearly as good looking as Crysis, but will have one of the best storylines and gameplay experience, which I prefer.

    • ANET

      I raise you a GW2

      • Juan

I raise you Batman: Arkham City or Uncharted 3

      • Fawx

and here ANET you are an example of the over-hyped 'GRAPHICS PORN' that AssClown was just talking about

    • Inviolability

No necros aaaaaaaggggghhhhhh I'm still mad about that.

    • DirtyNJ

Portal was the very best design/story/gameplay/mindfuck ever. Diablo 3 is top ten material though.
Capcoms okami was pretty awesome too.

  • BroLyle

Old School All the way…Zelda, Mike Tyson's Punchout, Contra. Such Classics!

  • Drew Burken

50/50 on the choices….some of them were vast improvements the other new version cannot even touch the oldies!

  • powersticks

New. I do enjoy the occasional old school game though.

  • Games_Suck

    video games are for losers.

the bigger question is: who is a bigger loser… dorks who played video games a long time ago or dorks who play video games now?

    • BaseballRube

… or Trolls are they the bigger losers? #trollingtrolls

      • Games_Suck

No. You are the biggest loser in the world. Congratulations. Loser.

        • Coldzilla

    • real talk

the dorks that played games a long time ago are the ones who employ feeble minds like yours.. the dorks that play games now are the ones that will employ the kids that you might accidently pop out

you made an account just to troll this post? damn bro

    • Suck_Games

Just because you're Amish doesn't mean we have to stop having fun.

  • dbolusaf

New school games are way better, the graphics and story lines just get better. Nostalgia is the only reason why old games can compete.

    • The Ugly

That's not true at all. I like both old and new games, but some of the story lines of the old games are just as great as they are today. Check out The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past or any of the Final Fantasy's, or Goldeneye 007, or the Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2, or Ninja Gaiden, I can go on for a long time! The best part is the replayability and not just for nostalgic reasons. Have you ever played any old school (pre 2000) games? Because your post sounds like you are a 15 year old who has only played the newbies.

      • dbolusaf

all i am saying is try playing goldeneye right after black ops…u cant do it…its like when wolfenstien came out it was an awesome 1st person shooter…now look at it…it sux

        • Travis

Unfortunately i agree… Goldeneye was king and will forever be a huge part of my life, but its not easy to pick up an N64 controller nowadays and play it longer than ten minutes.

  • http://thechive.com/ mattythegooch

Why can't I find ANY of these games for my Polystation??

Golden Eye was the cows udders, bee knees….

    • MAX_POW

            • Franklin1138

You can get an old Xbox for $30 at a used game shop, and then you can play the first two Halo games.

            • Matt

    old school

  • JD52Tulsa

Each of these games are great. You can NEVER knock where these games came from. This also applies with music. It all had to start somewhere.

  • chodanutz

Tecmo Super Bowl has, and always will be, the greatest video game ever

  • pleascarter

    old school Contra……..nuff said

    • chodanutz

the cheat code to end all cheat codes!

    • ROBB

UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT BA START

  • homebuilder

Nothing will beat Mortal Kombat or GoldenEye.

  • Greg

The old ones will always be better, those games didn't have the eye candy crutch to lean on, if game play sucked, it sucked period, no graphics to save it.

Games today get by on graphics and painfully redundant game play, back then games were more challenging and had far superoir game play.

    • correct

Yeah It was fun and challenging not just repetitive redundancy.

  • Beer...

Give me a beer and Ill play whatever is in front of me.

    • Since-u-is

      Cheers to that!

    • varlotto

      Barbie's Horse Adventure ftw!

  • jdfish2279

#3 I think when it comes to certain games, old is better. Its hard to beat the hundreds of hours I put in on Goldeneye multi-player parties at my house. But there is a great storyline to the Halo series and great gameplay as well.
But like #5, I think the way COD and Battlefield has changed the look of warfare games, it would be hard pressed to choose the older over the newer, especially with the addition of online play.

    • smiley

I miss game mods, that was the big selling point of BF1942

  • nananamatman

This was a debate? Why? Boxing is the only game going down hill since Punch Out, but so is the sport.

  • OhNo

There are certain old games that are fun: Mario Kart, Kerby, Super Mario Bros., Sonic, Donky Kong, etc.. But honestly I would rather play new school games: Call of Duty, Battlefield, Portal… Much more interactive and you can never go wrong with good graphics.
