You Are Here – a beautiful speech by Carl Sagan (Video)

An image taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft as it exited our solar system shows the Earth some 4 billion miles away. Astronomer Carl Sagan describes brilliantly how every single person and living thing we have come to know, exists only on this “pale, blue dot.”

    • nemesis

Please tell me you were being ironic.

"Hears humbling speech by Carl Sagan about the insignificance of human trivialities"

      "Starts comment thread with 'first!!!"

      • yoyoeyes

        more like,

"responds to first comment with ridiculous response"

    • droopaloop

Get the fuck off of my dot.

    • http://www.saladandchips.com Aenonomous

Go eat a plate of human shit. Be the first to comment on it.

  • ijjhg

I totally spaced out at the end

    • Katie

How am I supposed to work after that

      • VDiesel

        Fuck my tits!

  • Tom L

That was shit. I could have made a better video of my cats screwing 😦

    • Tom L

Oh, okay, dislike it you keyboard warriors? How was that interesting in any way? I bet i could video my Son's farts and get more views

      • Grant

"how was that interesting in any way"….your lack of interst in humanity is sad

      • Intellect1618

A great video is not determined by its number of views, as is indicative of Youtube and the failings of society.

      • Yep

Hey, could you you submit a video of your son farting while the cats are screwing in the background, 'cause that sounds great.

    • gunner

maybe you should go live on another planet. no one wants you here. begone ;p

    • Machinist

      Obvious troll is obvious…

    • OnehandJack

      Link?

    • JDB

It's probably b/c he disagrees with this guy saying his religion and political views, mixed with the 1,000's of others views and religions in the history of our planet, makes what he believes irrelevant.

    • its_forge

I hope karma causes you to rot from the crotch outward.

    • HoneyBadger

This Tom L guy procreated?!?! Well tickle my titties, the average IQ of the planet just dropped by 75. Congratulations Tommy boy you just made earth the dumbest planet in the universe, Mars has red dust smarter than your entire fucking family.

  • Alison

    That was really beautiful.

    • mtpuckhead

Don't know if I have ever been speechless and felt so insignificant . Mind. Blown.

  • digitalPUNK

that was awesome! just goes to show how microscopically small our existence is in the grand scheme of the universal. dam near mind-bending.

  • etcrr

Far out, reminds me how insignificant our life span is compared to how old the universe is

  • MrCoffeeman

All our base are belong to us.

  • Runes

Can everyone now put down their religions, take a deep breath and realise that they are no longer needed. The Chive, to me, seems to be based on the idea that life is short and so we should clear out the bullshit as soon as possible and have a good time as often as possible. Anyone? Anyone?

    • Alperen

You are worse than any religious person can possibly be.

      • Runes

Yeah totally. Except for the whole mass murder, racial/sexual/political/sexist thing. What a cunt I must be.

        • Godwin's Law

based on the video, both religion AND science are currently irrelevant. Apparently, all you saw was how Religion was the root of all war. Scientists, just like political leaders, can sometimes vie for power and fame, hence and as a result of all those self named theories and discoveries.

          Speaking of which, Nazis.

          • Tooshay

Science is irrelevant? Science gave us the damn image which started the whole video.

            • tickler

and so the argument begins leaving the video forgotten already…..

              • Murphy, it's you

                ^this.

          • truth

I totally heard Tosh's voice saying 'Titties' when I read Nazis.

          • Grant

This comment just makes me feel you have no true understanding of science, its power and its ability to limit suffering. What you are missing is that fact that yes scientist can also be be bad people and do bad things however science is not the CAUSE of those actions. Religion motivates people to do horid things in its name. Speaking of which….NAZIS!

          • ThatGuy

What a thoroughly stupid comment. Nazis didn't use science, they cherrypicked evidence to fit their bizarre and idiotic preconceived notions. You seriously need to look into not being so stupid.

            • Karma Rocket

So do you considering some of the Nazi discoveries are being used today no matter how gruesome of horrifying their origin. YOU should check your facts before looking like a bigger idiot than Grant up there.

              • Karma Rocket

                or*

              • Grant

Im curious as to which of my comments are "idioitic"?

        • Alperen

Wait , wait . There is the thing i hate most in the whole universe. Ignorance. You are , sir, talking about something you have no idea about.

          Cogito ergo sum.

      • HoneyBadger

That was quite possibly the most mellow comment I have ever read and your obviously religious ass had nothing better to say than the typical religious response to anyone who questions their beliefs. Loosen up bro, six feet under feels the same to every dead person, so enjoy the above ground time you have been given.

    • DavyJones

IMO this video points directly to a creator and divine chaos of the universe. It is beyond me how anyone can truly ponder the universe and life in general and say, meh must have been an accident. Religion, just like science, is human. We all make mistakes and do things in the name of religion or science that completely undermine the true goal of both. Which is to understand and appreciate the cosmos.

      • iChive

Right on, DavyJones! I frankly find the argument between religion and science to be kind of childish. They're hardly mutually exclusive–anyone who says they are doesn't understand either.

The only reason that the debate even exists is that it's kept alive by absurdly close-minded and sensationalist comments like "religion = the whole mass murder, racial/sexual/political/sexist thing," and "science = Nazis." If we're going to take anything away from the brilliant Carl Sagan, it's that maybe these petty arguments aren't really so important in the scheme of things.

        • Grant

"They're hardly mutually exclusive–anyone who says they are doesn't understand either"

They may not be mutual exclusive but the gap between the two is monumental. While science has no need to bridge this gap, religion does as many of the its teachings are directly contradictory to what science has proven to be true. Religious groups continue to poor millions of dollars into research with the goal of proving the existance of god, with no real progress made (and none likely to be made). How about we throw that money at something usefull like, ending hunger or curing cancer?

Thats where my issue with religion comes in, there are just so many better things we can spend our time in energy on to help humanity then praying to a sky wizard to solve our issues for us. As the grat Sagan said "There is no hing that help will come from elsewhere to save us, form ourselves"

  • tom

that first guy is such a loser. he fails to appreciate the beauty and awesomeness of that video. probably didnt watch it and just went straight down the comments to post the first one. wow

  • Bobbie Brown

Congrats to Whitney Houston on 5 days of Sobriety

    • ThatGuy

I laughed at this. And I am contemplating putting it on my facebook. No one looks at it anyway.

weak and trendy. no one can say it, like Carl Sagan.

    Anyone know the song title?

    • truth

Yep. Here is just the audio.

      • jhjkh

        ….You ass.

    • Piano

I am almost positive it is something by Ludovico Einaudi. If you search for him, you will find many similar sounding songs, but I don't know which one it is. But that would be my best guess

    • Piano

I found it. It is indeed by Ludovico Einaudi and the song is called "The Earth Prelude"

    • mike

Much of Ludovico Einaudi's music is like this; full of beauty and emotion. It amplifies the depth of anything and everything.

  • ThornyDevil

    In 240p.

If I'm not mistaken, this was made just after the Cosmos series, in 1982: 30 years ago. And it's still 100% relevant.
