Piano players with true talent in their hands fart in this guys general direction. Put a piano in front of this guy and let's see his feeble jabs at the keys make any sort of music.

    • https://www.facebook.com/notme4 Dave Bojanzyk

put a launchpad in front of a pianist and lets see his feeble jabs at the keys make any sort of music.

      • http://www.facebook.com/tyler.burkholder.3 Tyler Burkholder

i hv e a freind who is a very talented pianist… put that pad in front of him and id be willng to beat he could play the shit out of that thing. maybe not at the level this guy does but he would definitely shred i better than what this dude could jam on a piano. but u never know.. maybe this "dj" started on a piano and im just talking out my ass.

        • http://twitter.com/JohnMcFadin @JohnMcFadin

You've been talking out of your ass with every damn comment you've made. I suggest you shut up. Never understood the people willing to sound like idiots with a direct link to their facebook profile that has your friends and family on it. All it takes is one person to see how stupid you are, and then you're being attacked on facebook. Either you have balls, or you're very stupid, and since this whole comment is about how stupid you are, I'm going with the latter.

    • Matthew

you're right, if this guy's never played a piano in his life he'd probably be quite bad at playing one

    • _DoC_

As a piano player myself, I truely want you to go fuck off because this has no comparison to a piano. You might as well be a drummer going "put a set of drums in front of this guy and Blah Blah". Even still, you can take a MIDI mapped keyboard with samples and with practice, he could perform the same thing.

      • Turrebo

So the difference between him and you is that you learned to play an 88 key piano, and he learned to play the beginner's Minesweep field with samples?

I'm a piano player too, and I bet I can get a decent beat out of that thing in less time than he needs to find out a piano doesn't have a on/off button.

        • _DoC_

You mean "Minesweeper"? Tell you what, post your video of you being awesome on the piano and let everyone else be the judge of that. But even if you are – still apples and oranges comparison.

Oh, and if he had an *electronic* piano (or keyboard) like most people, then yes, it does have an on/off button.

        • bazz

Do it, go and make a video to prove this guy on the internet wrong (Turrebo). That's the shit resume's should be made of.

      • boop

Spot on! Great reply. The people who say "but he couldn't do shit with a real instrument!" are almost always people who don't play an instrument and seem to think it's some godly art that young people don't understand these days. Whether it's piano, drums, guitar or one of these midi-pads they all require excellent coordination and precise timing to master. Just because it's not a conventional 'instrument' does not make the user talentless.

    • Mrs_Conejo

assuming that he doesn't know how to play the piano…

    • Danny

lets get this straight…this guy plays the keyboard..too so stfu bitches

    • jim

and put a piano player in front of a novation launchpad and see what they can do…surely they would be shit! your argument is like saying a guitarist has no talent because they can't play piano! its a new generation instrument, and the only impedance in this situation is your closed mindedness!

    • facts-straight

I know M4SONIC personally. He actually a pretty good pianist, and can play other instruments too, before he started down this track. I know, it sucks when someone can do more than you.

  • money shot marlon

    Woooooo! 1st

    • money shot marlon

      Let me have my moment

      • _DoC_

Your moment ended at the first thumbs down.

        • money shot marlon

Still Better then the thumb up your ass

          • _DoC_

No, no…few things are better than the thumb up my ass and that is not one of them.

  • Sonic

    Madeon, is that you?!

    • Jeff

I think it is. Don't know why you got thumbed down.
      That's totally Madeon.

      • Alex

this is absolutely not madeon… it's M4Sonic, even though both are young DJs/Producers, they grew up 10,000 miles away from each other.

        • Spork

It's the truth. Or at least what truth one can find from YouTube.

    • Matt

Exactly what I thought when I saw this video. This is not a good display of dj skills thats for sure. Anybody can fill up ableton with samples and slap there fingers around on a pad on cue.

      • Still ranting

show me somebody doing this on vinyl, then ill be impressed

  • https://www.facebook.com/AKParish Andrew Parish

This video put a huge smile on my face! Love it!

    • Confused

I don't remember my light bright doing that.

  • Zedhere

    That's pretty bad ass.

  • livesinacave

so that's what a DJ does?? had no idea….

    • altec7777

no..most djs like deadmouse just play a pre recorded track and dance around while sometimes adding in live breakdowns. This guy is actually playing, on the fly, a track that a mainstream dj would put together by layering hundreds of samples over the course of an entire recording session…amazing

      • partysauce

except he's not designing the track as he goes, and he's not creating the sounds either. He's playing them as they're mapped to the keyboard. It's the same as playing a regular piano, only the piano's notes would have to change for every song. The track was previously composed and instead of pressing 1 "play button", he presses many buttons at the precise times that they need to be heard. Unfortunately, the effect would be lost to a crowd since they'd be so doped up or pumped up that they wouldn't realize what was happening and how impressive it actually was.

      • http://www.facebook.com/nate.birkas Nate Birkas-Schatz

You don't know how deadmau5 plays… lol. It's not that hard to do a little research ya know? I mean he was the feature article in last month's Rolling Stone.. Pick one up! He even talks about how he DOESN'T just click play and dance around..

        • wax-on

AAHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! you are all wrong he is a glorified keytarist! the phrase DJ means DISK JOCKEY I see no disks being spun and too call him a DJ ruffles the feathers of people like me who actually own a large collection of RECORDS, "and not in a hipster douche way".

.just some guy spinning his stacks of wax.

          • its_forge

Deejay means a lot more than spinning records these days homey.

            • http://twitter.com/ThisIsVictorKim @ThisIsVictorKim

and that is the problem. A DJ plays records whether vinyl, cd, or mp3, a mixes them for a crowd to consume by dancing. someone like the performer in this video, or araabMuzik, is more of a controllerist; someone who performs presequenced songs/mashups live.

there is a huge difference. A DJ is still a DJ, mainstream is just tacking on unrelated musical performances into the fray.

              • Mac

But seriously, this guy kinda sucks on the MPC compared to the likes of araabMuzik or Jeremy Ellis, or maybe it's just my general hate of that Brostep/Electro crossover he is playing…

    • Zexed

That ain't what a DJ does, but if it was…. fuck, I'd jump at the chance!

    • fred

      thats not all

  • MikeyP13

When does he put actual music on?

    • CultureShock

when you watch his hands, instead of looking down feeling self concise about your tiny man hood…to put the music choice aside what he is doing is actually extremely impressive LaunchPad Masters FTW

    • fred

      thru the computer

  • Justin

That's a funny looking keyboard, but damn it makes some awesome noise

Can't you guys respect a skillful craft when you see it? This requires incredible timing and hours on hours of practice. Yea you might not like the music but that shit is hard. cunts

        • John

"cunts" ha, way to keep calm. Btw, I can do just about the same thing on the phone in 10 minutes.

          • http://twitter.com/nickinwarcal @nickinwarcal

Not a big "keep calm" guy. My life sucks so I take it out on people here. And that is impressive, I'm sure the chive will post your phone beat when you send in the video. Can't wait to see it!

            • http://www.facebook.com/tyler.burkholder.3 Tyler Burkholder

if you're here to be a dick and get ur anger out becuuse, "your life sucks" maybe you should GTFO! Or you could get off the computer and enjoy a healthy activity to improve your mental health. bickering at random dudes online isn't a health form of stress relief. ik you probably think you have it all figured but trust me when i say a better hobby will seriously help dude. go ahead and br angry at me, idc. just trying to help. best of luck.

              • http://twitter.com/nickinwarcal @nickinwarcal

I have a full time job, and many hobbies. My previous comment was what some of us chivers here would call "an attempt at humor." I am simply calling out those who don't appreciate something that someone has put a lot of work into, like this video.

          • mbns

So let's see it. Make a video and prove it. Walk the walk, big guy.

        • Nargon

if only he could do music with that thing but now its just button-mashing

      • Ethan

What he's doing "Pressing Buttons" is pretty much the equivalent of Jimi Hendrix "Just plucking strings". It's difficult to match up the music with what he's doing on that keyboard, but it is just shy of amazing…

        • Spelling Police

Trying to compare this loser with Jimi Hendrix is the worlds biggest fail. Not remotely the same thing. The guy in this vid is a talentless hack. Jimi was a visionary.

          • boop

What a predictable response! The example Ethan used was just, you're obviously too close-minded to even entertain the thought. I'm a guitarist and I can play pretty much everything Jimi Hendrix played but I reckon I would struggle to do what this dude's doing here, seriously! I don't get how he can tell which button does what with out any clear markings, at least guitars have dotted frets! And let's not forget there was a time when an ignorant generation also referred to Jimi Hendrix as 'just noise' , don't trash something because you don't understand it!

      • its_forge

You wouldn't even be able to do the left hand rhythm track part. With both hands.

        • Meh

Actually, that was my problem with this video– the rhythm/bass part got skewed fast both times when his hands came to the same corner. Guy should get a visual metronome for the top of his board if he can't keep pace. Also, he had basically only four repeating hand positions– I mean, I enjoyed it, but I wasn't blown away or anything.

          • forlackofbetterterms

THANK YOU! I thought it was only the fact I used to be on drumline that I noticed his inability to keep tempo during the steady eighths. As we used to say, his favorite band must be RUSH…

            • MohawkJon

Aww man don't knock rush. Just say a Canadian joke instead.

    • Kunal Patel

Your biased opinion of electronic music has clouded your ability to see talent.

You have the right to your own opinion, but I have the right to tell you how fucking stupid it is.

this guy kunal wins. its a genre of music, just like how country music, to me sucks ass.

  • MUpde

  • Lord Harry Latts

    that's pushing buttons…..definitely NOT DJ'ing.

You lost me when I saw the mac books.

LOL if you think the great deejays don't use Macbooks you're brain damaged or something.

      • its_forge

So using samples on vinyl is djing but doing the same thing with digitally recorded samples isn't. OoooOooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooOKAYTHEN.

        • Zetum

they are hiptsers, they cannot understand this, let it go XD

  • neXx

    – sick.

  • Cut

not a DJ. Skills sure, but not Disk Jockeying skills.

  • pukker

    • RYNO!

and how about I shit down your throat? How about that? That video is awesome and you suck.

  • guff

    fuck music its shit

    • MasterFlash

So, by this statement, you;re saying that music in general is shit? Because that would make you a fucking moron.

  • mbns

He's playing a Novation Launchpad most likely through Ableton Live. Basically 64 buttons, all can be mapped to do pretty much anything through sysex commands. Looks like he just has a series of samples and drumbeats mapped, maybe a midi instrument for the individual notes he was playing. Pretty impressive but usually most of the work is done on the back end, programming the drum loops ahead of time and triggering each loop or fill rather than playing them by hand. Pretty skillful though!

  • http://www.facebook.com/cameron.pollock.7 theycallmedaddy

i remember when people used to play real instruments. good times.

    • Kunal Patel

What is considered a real instrument? Your ignorance in entertaining.

      • Guest

Well I define a real instrument as one hat produces sound waves by direct mechanical interaction. Meaning, if the sound is orginally produced as bits on a computer..then its not a real instrument. While this does take skill, it is essentially useless as a digital computer can do the same thing, just better and faster. In a real instrument, a computer can not play it. It is considered an extension of the body and something that comes from the soul.

Either way, DJ music sucks and people should play more real instruments, at least in the mainstream.

        • Devils advocate

O you mean like keyboards and electric guitars with the millions of sound effect peddles and loops?

        • http://twitter.com/ThisIsVictorKim @ThisIsVictorKim

"While this does take skill, it is essentially useless as a digital computer can do the same thing"

A Human has to sequence the music, has to perform it. A computer is as useless as a saxophone is without a musician to use it.

        • Kunal Patel

So I suppose you don't appreciate the music made by a self-playing piano, although it is still a piano. Because the piano is not played by a person, but by the computer. Or do you still enjoy the music because it's played from an actual instrument, even though the actual self-playing piano only requires the skill of pressing a simple play button.

You are open to having your own opinions, but to say that this isn't a real instrument, and therefore ridiculing it, makes you lose all credibility.

      • http://www.facebook.com/cameron.pollock.7 theycallmedaddy

        chill out dude.

    • its_forge

If Beethoven were around today he'd be composing on a Korg sampling keyboard.

    • http://twitter.com/ThisIsVictorKim @ThisIsVictorKim

Isn't a piano as analogous and similar to a MIDI controller triggering sounds that live on a computer? The difference is that while a piano can trigger only one sound, a MIDI controller can trigger an infinite number of sounds. at the end of the day though, you press a button, the button sends physical communication to sound source (whether a series of levers moving a mallet, or a series of electrical pulses accessing digitally stored data) to be played.

If "real instrument" is defined by something that plays sound when it is interacted with, what does that say for electric guitars? sure they make a sound if they're not plugged in, but so do midi controllers. If you tap on a controller it makes just as much noise as a table being tapped on does. In this example, is the table not an instrument (ergo the midi controller as well) because its purpose is not to make sound, make music?

    • idiomicon

Not sure what makes it less of an Instrument. Last I checked an instrument is any "contrivance or apparatus for producing musical sounds" (Dictionary.com). I feel that this is just as good as any string, woodwind, or any other type of 'classic' instrument out there. It's simply something new and I think that it takes time, but I don't see this being any less valid as a "real" instrument.

    • http://www.facebook.com/cameron.pollock.7 theycallmedaddy

dang people getting way too worked up over this. i'm not bashing this or anything and i never said it didn't take skill so i dont know why you dudes are jumping to conclusions here. i made a simple comment. people get so damn defensive. relax please.
