Tonya Harding vs. Nancy Kerrigan
The story that captured headlines around the world in 1994. In the midst of an American figure skating rivalry and one month prior to the Lillehammer Olympics, Nancy Kerrigan was attacked following a practice session. It was soon discovered that Tonya Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, conspired to injure Kerrigan before the games, and hired Shane Slant to hit her knee with a lead pipe. She managed to avoid serious injury and still competed, earning a silver medal, while Harding finished eighth.
Tonya Harding pled guilty one month later to conspiring to hinder prosecution, and was sentenced to three years probation, a $100,000 fine, and was banned for life from the U.S. Figure Skating Association. She still denies involvement in the plan, stating that she only found out about it after it had happened.
In the aftermath of her skating career, Harding went on to star in an amateur porn movie, had a short stint as a professional boxer, started a band called the ‘Golden Blades’, and appeared in a few reality TV shows. The story was most recently retold in the film ‘I, Tonya’. If nothing else, at least we get more Margot Robbie.
