When Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski pitched Batman: The Animated Series in the early 1990s, they probably didn’t realize that they were creating an aesthetic movement that fans would adore 30 years later.
By painting backgrounds directly onto black paper instead of standard white board, they birthed “Dark Deco,” a striking hybrid of 1930s Art Deco architecture, film noir shadows, and Gothic romanticism.
Batman fans all around the world immediately fell in love with the style, and we understand why.
