It was 1947, and Ralph Braun was an underdog. At the age of just six years old, he was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy — a disease that causes progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. Ralph’s doctor told his parents he wouldn’t live to see his teenage years. As he continued to grow, Ralph relied on piggyback rides from his dad, and eventually a manual wheelchair for mobility. Ralph then made a promise to himself: he would do whatever it took to regain his independence. He would take matters into his own hands.
Little did Ralph know, this promise would be the catalyst to a movement that would change the face of mobility.
In Ralph’s words: “No matter the obstacle, no matter the challenge, no matter what other people may think about you, you can rise above anything you face.” Ralph is starting to sound like one of our incredible Chive Charities recipients, right? Our superheroes who rise above.
