Bill Murray was sitting behind home plate at Game 3 of the division series between the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs. Bill had invited theCHIVE and William Murray Golf to join him for the memorable week.
There’s an unwritten rule in Chicago that you should let Bill watch his beloved Cubs uninterrupted. Asking Bill for an autograph between innings is a decent bet but not a good one, depends on his mood. But once the game is over all bets are off. Luckily Anthony Rizzo’s 2-out single in the bottom of the 8th had given the Cubs a narrow 2-1 victory. Bill was in good spirits.
A young couple, Robbie and Kristen Schloss, approached Bill. The two had been struggling with fertility since they got married and recently discovered they were finally pregnant. Nobody in the family was aware yet. The Schloss’ thought Bill would provide the perfect messenger for the good news.
“Hey, I got news for you.” said Bill, “You’re gonna be grandparents!” A beaming Robbie added, “We’re having a baby!”
The video would later go viral. But at the moment, Bill needed to figure out how to get out of Wrigley Field.
Bill was in bottom of the bowl of the Wrigley, and he’s got to make it outside somehow with thousands of fans stuffing the aisle hoping for a moment with the actor. Bill embraces the dance. If you catch him, he’ll graciously pause for a photo, then dart down an empty row of seats with the energy of a school boy. Bill knows Wrigley field like the back of his hand.
We got out of Wrigley faster than I ever thought, it was exhilerating. ‘Ok, we made it. What now?’
“I’m gonna find my cellist, the violin, and my piano gal and go do a jingle at the watering hole.” I didn’t consider for a moment that Bill was joking. A few minutes later world-renown cellist Jan Vogler appeared, out of breath, and asked where we were going? In Bill’s world you must suspend your disbelief, ignore your critical faculties telling you what’s coming next is fiction, because what’s happening next is very real.
