‘Monster Engine’ brings children’s drawings to life (12 Photos)

Eleven years ago Dave Devries started the Monster Engine project with one single question: What would a child’s drawing look like if it were painted realistically? This month, Dave’s art is being celebrated at the INDYINK gallery where dozens of artists are putting their own takes on children’s sketches. Look for those photos next week. Many more photos here.

This is like the coolest thing ever… bringing to life little children’s drawings and making them into realistic ones… idk there’s something magical about it!

Awesome idea, agreed he drew the childs drawings in a ‘dark’ sense. I’d like to see the same again but in a happy go lucky kids mindset to truly bring them to life (Although the baseball pic with the scary teeth seems obviously meant to be scary). These would be great as an album to buy for your kids so when they’re older they can see their drawings from childhood brought to life. I’d buy one as a 21st gift for my child for sure!

Neat but why are all those drawings freaky?
Yes, it would have looked better if the colors and sceneries had been colorful. Except for some of those (like that guy on the cross).

This has to be a choice. A good artist knows how to change his color scheme to something more happy or child like. So why?! If my kid’s drawing was in there, he’d probably cry when seeing the “artistic rendition” of it.

Is this only meant to entertain adults? It would have been much more interesting if it was for both adults & kids to see drawings differently.

The paintings are the interpretation of the artist, he chose to bring a darker side. As the artist it is his choice, if you want happy paintings or feel they should be different or a better interpretation, then grab a brush and paint and get to work.

  • Giu

On the other hand, the painter gives a creepy interpretation of the children’s drawings. The movements may have been the same, but the tone is definitely not. Using expert shading, he gives volume and texture to the drawings in totally different way.

He forgot the EYES. The kids drawings have them in rather funny, innocent way.

A dark interpretation, alright. But a realistic painting to children’s drawings? I don’t think so.

The painter is wrong to assume that his work answers the question “What would a child’s drawing look like if it were painted realistically?”

He totally misses the point. ☺
