This is Patty. He works at theCHIVE. Patty’s going to lose 35 lbs. in 45 days (17 Photos)

Meet Patrick McManis, everybody just calls him Patty. He's been one of my best friends since our college days. He recently quit a job he loathed to run theCHIVERY. After theCHIVERY launched successfully, you could see Patty changing a little; he smiled more (he already smile a lot), and there's a slight bounce in his step. After a few beers last week, Patty confided, "John, I want to lose a lot of weight."

Since I've known Patty, he's struggled with his weight. His grandfather died early of heart problems and Patty is determined not to follow in his footsteps. At the same time, Patty told me he wanted to inspire others who have the same problems. I told him I just happen to have a website that a few people drop in on daily.

Patty is the funniest, kindest person I've ever known. I honestly feel like I should pay to hang out with him sometimes.

Patty is going to lose 35 lbs. in 45 days. He's going to shrink into that tiny shirt up there until it fits him like a glove. This morning he weighed in at 225 lbs. He's on his way down to 190. We're going to bring you a photo every day in the 'Daily Afternoon Randomness' chronicling Patty's training, new diet, and all the pranks we pull on him along the way (this is theCHIVE after all).

Make no mistake about it, Patty is nervous and slightly on edge at the moment. He's giving up some of his favorite things. Yes, we're getting him a dietician and a personal trainer. We're doing this the right way. We understand some think this weight loss is too dramatic. Right now we have a green light. If that changes, we'll let you know. Hopefully, in the end, we'll help educate and inspire others to be a little more like Patty. You can contact Patty directly through this whole process to ask questions or encourage him at Pattydontbefat [at] gmail [dot] com. It's about lunch time here, I'm thinking house salad, hold the dressing.

Chive On,

John, Leo, Rick, Bob & Patty

Disclaimer: This is obviously dramatic weight loss. We don't advise anybody else doing this for any reason. But it's what Patty wants to do so here we go.

      Patty…more like Fatty. Hey-O

No seriously, good luck….and don't fuck my mom.

    • A Dude

I'll do it with you, bro – though sans dietician and personal trainer – it's time to get in shae for the summer. Let's get this!

    • rlmnofjean-ious

Luck has nothing to do with it. I'd bet Patty eats 1-2 giant meals a day and has the metabolism of a slug. When you let yourself starve your blood sugar dips, this signals to your body that you're starving and then next meal gets stored as fat. Eat regularly to control your blood sugar levels and your body will shed excess calories.

Step 1: Weigh yourself in the mornings, after you poop.
Step 2: Eat breakfast as soon as you wake up to get your metabolism working.
Step 3: Eat small meals EVERY 3-4 hours. 200-300 calories. Watch the fat/grease. The point is to keep your metabolism working ALL day. You'll also find your less hungry at meal times.
Step 4: Get a standing desk at the office.
Step 5: Hit the gym. Do 40 minutes of cardio a day (elliptical, stairs, treadmill if your fat ass doesn't destroy your shins).

Make sure you're drinking LOTS of water throughout the day. Weight training will also increase your metabolism and give your body calories to burn while it recovers. 1lb of muscle takes about 500calories a day to maintain.

Track your body fat %, not overall weight. Muscle weighs a lot more than fat.

and try and have fun….as much as it sucks.

      • kodakkid

    • BigDingo

I think he can do it! It's amazing how much fresh whole foods and no junk will trim you up in a healthy, steady way.

I vote the Chive has a Patty's day celebration when he makes it.

Also, some Chivette support would be wonderful.

      • BigDingo

        In the form of pictures…

        • Jen

patty is totally going to get laid b/c of this….

          • James

            • Dlllea

              or anyone.

  • T.T. Tiger

The only way this is going to happen is with a dietition and a personal trainer. Eating salad every day will mess you up and you will be off it in a week.

    • whitneysouth

Hey way to be supportive, douche.

Not everything that did or didn't work for you is the same for everyone else.

      • TCB12

Love it! Hope to see Whitney, you & Mandy tomorrow afternoon.

    • http://twitter.com/surfchef @surfchef

So I was thinking you could go for a sexy chive-style pic for every 5 lbs lost.

      5 lbs. – sexy stormtrooper
10 lbs – sexy star trek uniform
      15 lbs – Wonder Woman
      20 lbs – sexy Cheerleader
25 lbs – hot girl in yoga shorts
30 lbs – an awesome spread with side boob
35 lbs – full on Princess Leia slave bikini

If it won't motivate Patty I am sure it would motivate someone. Even me.

    • http://www.aircraftraffle.co.za Grant

There you go Patty, the hotties are already offering them selves to you for an incentive….>!!!!!!

CHIVE………. RUN AN AUCTION TO SEE WHICH HOTTIES GETS TO TAKE THE NEW PATTY ON A DATE…!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But you would make such and awesome Kool-Aid man for halloween. Oh well good luck to you

  • Jayavc

Good luck! 35 in 45 days is a tall order, but we will be cheering you on!!

As a person who fights with it myself, I heard it best as "it's all an input /output thing" Try to take up working out along with walking/ jogging. It will help alot. Then just try to cut down on the inputs.

Its simple math really, you eat less calories than your burn, and the weight will start coming of. Take in less, put out more!

      • Ingrid

actually, thats a bit of a myth – whilst the input output theory is true to a certain extent, there is a lot more to it than that. its about what our bodies were deisgned to eat – when we were cavemen roaming the lands. how much weight you put on is going to depend on the type of food you eat and how the body process that food. insulin metabolizes carbs, lowers blood sugar and tells body to store fuel. so high carb intake = insulin spike = body told to store fat. so it is best to focus on fat and proteins rather than carbs – they will keep you full longer too. and if you are eating carbs, ensure that they are complex carbs that take longer to break down, rather than simple carbs like sugar. and whilst i'm on a nutrition rant – take some

        • Ingrid

omega three! our bodies need it – both physically and mentally (omega 3s can even control depression!). I am a believer in everything in moderation, so i have by no means given up my morning cereal and milk – or my afternoon chocolates – but with this knowledge i've tried to cut down on carbs, switch rice to quinoa, and added omega 3s. i'm not a nutritionist, these are just my findings based on my own research. for anyone facing a weight loss problem, i encourage you to look into the caveman diet πŸ™‚

and… go patty! πŸ™‚ but do make sure to loose it safely. good luck!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicole-Kirtley/511876169 Nicole Kirtley

You can do it Patty! And, by the way – I'm thinking you're pretty damned good-looking as you are. πŸ™‚

    • jessica

      yeah, really.
      he's got an amazing smile!

    • CalculatedRisk

Patty: In there like a bear, without even losing a pound πŸ™‚

    • ShaHiRo

I was just thinking the same thing! xo Patty

  • Jim

I hope he's going to be consulting with a nutritionist. Starvation diets are not good and losing that much weight in that short of a time can be equally as dangerous as being overweight.

    • Jennifer

read the text next. they're getting him a dietician and a personal trainer

      • Jim

Jeez… duh… how the hell did I miss that??

  • Brad

It's probably not healthy to lose that amount of weight so quick, just saying…

    • best interest

a healthy weight loss is1lb a week, maybe 2. averaging about 1lb a day is insane.

      • Jim6

Yes, you can lose more than 2lbs a week, but you will be losing muscle too. NOBODY wants that. So you will be a skinny person with no muscle and still have a bunch of fat. Ugh.

        • Brad

and muscle weighs more than fat, so as Patty works out and firms up his muscles, he's surely going to put on a couple lbs of muscle while losing a couple lbs of fat, which means his weight loss will be a little slower than he would expect…

  • mike kleinveld

TEAM PATTY! Kick some ass man!

    • zach

I'd rock a team patty tee shirt from the chive…

  • amanda

Patty's going to be a good looking dude come mid May.

  • WhatWillBee

    Congratulations on learning to read

    • Muthafker

Damn John, that's my bad then.

  • ydodonutshave2die

Patty you can do it! You should try a vegan or vegetarian diet. It is better for your heart and will help you lose a ton of weight without starving yourself!!!

    • Nazz1962

Oh hell no, ya gotta eat MEAT! Those tofu crap vegan diets will cause your dink to shrink and you'll end talking about your feelings and watching Lifetime in the afternoon.

Keep eating a man's meal (breakfast = eggs, bacon, and a goddamned gun!) etc, but eat less, drink plenty of water (lots of water!), and exercise! That's what I did. It's all about cardio, man … cardio!

      • ROK247

        this man knows his shit.

    • metalmountainco

BS…sorry, but its simply not true. It is possible, but not without the help of supplements and such. I know that personally, I would have to eat way more than I currently do to get the protein and other nutrients I need to fuel my body for what I put it through.

    • Evelyn Ponce Quintero

I'm a vegetarian and I'd say it's actually true, I'm convinced I would be 300 lbs if I ate meat πŸ™‚ And I'm perfectly healthy btw, used to be a runner and everything in high school and every time
I go in for a physical there's nothing wrong with me whatttsoever. Go Patty!

      • ydodonutshave2die

lol i would too nice to know sum chivers are vegetarian like me!

      Stuff White People Like # 32 Vegan/Vegetarianism

As with many white people activities, being vegan/vegetarian enables them to feel as though they are helping the environment AND it gives them a sweet way to feel superior to others. For further evidence, note how the vegetarian world has increasing levels of extemism (no meat, no dairy, no eggs, no fish, nothing that has been cooked, etc).

Much like not watching TV, this makes white people pretty hard to deal with on a day to day basis – having dinner, going to restaurants, having them over to watch political debates all become major challenges as they will talk about how they cannot eat anything and would rather that the meat and cheese be thrown in the garbage than put into their bodies.

But wait, aren’t there white people who eat organice, grain fed, free range cattle and chicken? Yes, these white people are wracked with guilt knowing that they are eating a dead animal, contributing to rainforest deforestation, and global warming.

Whether you are dealing with a meat eater or a vegan/vegetarian, there are many ways to use this information to your advantage.

If you require a favor from a vegetarian white person, you should invite them to a dinner with your family. When your mother/grandmother offers them a dish with meat in it, they will reject it saying that they are vegetarian. When the meal is over, tell them that your mom is very embarrassed, and that in your culture rejecting food is the equivalent of spitting on someone’s grave. They will then owe you favor, this can be repeated when you need trips to the airport, someone to help you move, a small interest free loan, or a place for your friend to crash.

If you need to gain leverage with a meat eater, it’s pretty easy. They already feel guilty, just point it out.

      • Nazz1962

Dude, why are you so racist against white people? You see, when you start with 'white people do this, or white people do that', how is that any different than racially profiling a black person, or chinese person, or japanese, etc …
Please refrain from posting your anti-white rhetoric because quite frankly, nobody cares.
When you stop making race an issue, racism will go away, and that's all we want. No more racism – enough already!

This is the second time (that I know of) that you've regurgitated some crap you read in a book.

        Please STOP!

  • equalizermax

Is he that guy in the picture "thechive World's Famous DAR"?

    • Diana Santos

      i think not…that guy is burnet…patty is blond…

    • DERP!

Yes, because when you lose weight you also change ethnicities.

  • Floopa Joopa

You're a badass, Patty. Keep it up!

  • zmoney

Give up booze n sugar. Drink a gallon + of water a day
