Abandoned smallpox hospital is a reminder of diseases gone by (9 photos)

According to ArtificialOwl.com, this smallpox hospital was Opened in 1856, on the southern tip of Blackwell's Island (now Roosevelt Island) was part of a multitude of public institutions to care for New York City's unfortunate and destitute.
The island sits between Queens and Manhattan, and was easily accessible by ferry; it was home to a prison, insane asylum, and other similar facilities. As of 1872, an annual number of 7,000 patients were treated, with an average of 450 deaths.
The island was renamed Welfare Island in 1921, and in the 1950s many of the institutions on the island became obsolete and were abandoned.

I’m looking forward to doing a CHIVE post in 20 years called “Abandoned Cancer hospital is a reminder of disease gone by”…

surprised a horror movie hasn't been filmed there.

    • equalizermax

The movie Shutter Island was based on this hospital

      • tony

but wasn't that a mental hospital in the movie?

      • Big E

The movie Shutter Island was based on a book, called Shutter Island

        • tony

i know that, but it was a mental hospital right?

      • R-Dub

You just love making shit up, dont you?

      • Katie

I'm pretty sure it was based on the mental hospital on the same island as this hospital. But not ON this hospital. This was for people with pox, not schizophrenics and others that were crudely cast aside in society.

  • Enon

Great post. I love seeing stuff like this.

  • mitter78

    creepy hospital is .. creepy.

That would be a good post. Let's hope for sooner than twenty years, though.

Holy shit! Hemp oil? For real?

NEVER happen. there is waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much money in killing people than there is in curing them. sad but true. Good job America!

because somehow america is responsible for healing the entire world? think before you speak

        • Cecil

NO, it just turns out that in other countries they make far more effort to get rid of the cancer before it reaches terminal (thus more profitable) stages. Try reading, thinking or pretending you comprehend before defensively spewing from a place of blind, irrational patriotism.

        • Malkintosh22

America's health system is one of the worst in the developed world. Look at Canada or even France. Bankruptcy is rampant in those who require heavy medical attention in America because of the corporations that make the medicines and those who administer them.

Isn't this the same "hotel" that was used in the Michael J. Fox classic, "For Love or Money"?

    • Robi5150

I was thinking the same thing.

Who's up for some paint ball? I know a place.

  • graphicshero

One of New York city's nick names is Gotham. Is this… could this be Arkham? or maybe its original inspiration? I mean an island between queens and Manhattan that held a prison and insane asylum… i don't thinks its that far of a stretch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/shane.belaire Shane Belaire

Arkham is a fictional city in Massachusetts, part of the Lovecraft Country setting created by H. P. Lovecraft and is featured in many of his stories, as well as those of other Cthulhu Mythos writers.

    Step 1: Buy building
    Step 2: Fix it up
    Step 3: ????
Step 4: Awesome zombie-proof fortress for inevitable Apocalypse.

    • tophernator

This looks like the sort of place the zombie apocalypse would begin. Just accept it; nowhere is safe!

    • Ali

That would be nice…….but with our government, not a chance! All the money they make off cancer patients, they will never allow a cure!!

  • yo yo ma

I believe this hospital is actually on North Brother Island, also a stone's throw from Queens. Very creepy place. They used this in that show about what would happen if humans disappeared from the planet to show how quickly our infrastructure and building would decay without upkeep.

  • asdf

That would be an awesome place to play paint ball

  • StayCalm

Lots of great (similar) buildings and photos found here: http://www.opacity.us/locations/

    • Gern Blanston

Thanks for the link, thats a cool site

Great place for a camping trip.

I actually live on Roosevelt Island (The North Side, the hospital in the pictures is located on the south side) at a building called the octagon ( http://www.octagonnyc.com/ ) which use to be an old asylum for crazy women (now renovated, but I still manage to bring crazy women home with me).

They are actually building a FDR memorial right next to this old hospital ( http://ny.curbed.com/tags/fdr-memorial )

Some movies were filmed here already; Dark Water, Salt and Spiderman.

    Cheers and happy Monday!

    • ChiveOn Rsvlt Is

I live there too, on the north side in the same building. Chive on!

      • http://www.facebook.com/chrisatrice69 Christopher DeMunbrun

We should probably walk over there and take some Chive pics!

    • Katherine,

Wait… You live in an old asylum….?
      That's freaking awesome.

    Fuck cancer!

      Get money?

  • xDV8x

I don't think these are as creepy as the abandoned amusement parks are.

  • John

Wasn´t this building featured in some mission in GTA4?

  • The_Dood

Reminds me of the TB one in Ohio that I explored years ago… Only that one didn't look like a castle like this does. It was still awesome though. I really wish there was a way to legally go and explore places like this. Exploring abandoned places is a way better way to spend a Saturday night than just sitting around getting drunk and playing video games.

  • Chuck

That is a beautiful building, I would love to own that and turn it into a hotel.

  • Ashley

    So…..
    Shutter island is real?

  • Danger_Pat

      Thought the same thing lol

Noice to shoot nudes for October on the Chive calendar.

Zombie apocalypse hideout maybe? A bit run down, but it could be built back up. Most of those edifices look pretty solid… and fortress like.

  • http://twitter.com/Poopy_McPoop @Poopy_McPoop

Maybe the guys of Ghost Adventures will film an episode there.

  • http://echogeo.wordpress.com/ echogeo

Has that Ghost Hunter crew ever spent a night there?

    • http://www.facebook.com/charles.pandorf Charles Pandorf

I don't think TAPS has ever done an investigation there.

    • Nathanial Hörnblowér

      GhostFacers spent the night there
