Barry White approves of this video
Nothing like a bunch of ivy leaguers singing about being enslaved.
Its a song about coal mining, not enslavement. At the time the song is set, work is not paid in cash, but in bonds which could only be redeemed at the "company store" meaning cash savings were impossible.
sounds like slavery to me
Similar, but there is a marked difference. People working for scrips or bonds were used as an alternative to slave trade, but they had a few more rights. The bonds could be exchanged for goods (which slaves rarely received), real money (though rarely at a 1:1 ratio) and effectively working for Scrips was an "opt-in" situation, whereas slavery, usually, is not.
Slaves are not allowed to refuse to work, whereas workers such as in the song can (they just don't get their slip of paper, as worthless as it is). They could also theoretically leave, but were often so far in debt with their employer that was very difficult.
And as for Ivy League singers doing this song, does it matter? It tells a story of hardship, graft, and life in depression. The story is the same, no matter what "class" of person sings it. But it seems to me it would be greatly more offensive if they only sang of their privileged lifestyle and upbringing, good luck in getting to excellent colleges, and of all the money they would one day make.
So should we call it modern day slavery, if you have no other choice but to work for your life or die.. is that not a type of enslavement?
You *could* but it does somewhat detract from the meaning of forced slavery, and you start down the murky path of all employment being a form of slavery. Its really debt bondage.
im going with "no" on the football jersey with necktie look
at first i didn't get what you meant by "football jersey"…… soccer jersey to us Americans
it clearly says "crew" that would be rowing haha
Fuckin Ivy League dorks. I love how people go to this shit and think they’re all earthy and high and mighty. I wouldn’t go to this to throw a bag of excrement at his shitty jersey. Future leaders of America. FML.

In the western world almost everybody alive today is, in terms of economic freedom (even if not actual wealth), better off than the people depicted in the song. Should it never be sung again?
Pete, I agree wholeheartedly. By singing that song, and having it shown in places like this, it's keeping that song alive and has now been a tool in spreading the knowledge of a different time and way of life. These guys aren't bad people because they are students at Yale. As the Dalai Lama says, 'Be kind whenever possible…It is always possible'. This is a time to just appreciate both the singers and their song without bringing in a load of judgement. Sing away, Yale singers. Thank you for sharing.
I thought it was just me and my roommate who randomly sang 16 Tons acapella!
I want to hear him sing "You;re a Mean One, Mr Grinch"
Dude has his sh*t together, but…he's a baritone or first bass…
Okay, maybe I'm being a braggart or arrogant. And he knows how to sing! Good singer!
But I can sneeze in a deeper voice than this cat. I can back it up, but that might seem arrogant.
SERIOUSLY though…that's not a deep voice! It's a mellifluous and rich voice!
so why isn't this dude signed up for the olympics?
