First off, though nobody seems to know exactly how National Pizza Day was created, we do know a bit about how pizza itself was concocted. The first pizza ever assembled was delivered to mankind via the Romans out of placenta bread that was covered in various layers of herbs, sauce and cheese. However, despite these early pie iterations technically being pizzas, the modern pizza we now commonly recognize wouldn’t be invented until the 18th century when the citizens of Naples, Italy began creating flatbread dishes covered in garlic, basil, cheese and tomatoes.
Later in the 19th century, Italian immigrants brought the dish back to the good old US of A., where it later became popular after soldiers from World War II returned home after getting a taste for the heavenly dish while stationed in Italy. And it’s been game on ever since.
And just a few facts for your own edification, did you know that every year four billion pizzas are sold in the U.S.? And on average, for every man, woman and child in the states, over 23 pounds of pizza is scarfed down.
