It’s hard to fathom it now, but once upon a time, you wouldn’t really find Christmas movies in theatres in December, not just the ones close to the day, but all throughout December.
Now, it seems that the December is left open for blockbuster releases and when it comes to certain films, like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Richard Donner’s Superman, these make sense. They’re epic fantasy films that are perfect for the holiday break and the shitty weather outside.
But sometimes, a studio will release a film that will do the opposite of getting you into the holiday spirit. Movies like Scarface, Clint Eastwood’s Sudden Impact and even the ’76 version of King Kong. These are ok, but not quite filled with whimsy and joy for your fellow person.
Then there’s these films, released on the closest Friday to Christmas, that somehow don’t really scream out “movie date after we open presents!” Check ’em out!
