The 500 inhabitants endure days ranging from 3 hours in December to 21 hours in June and survive off reindeer meat with a side of horse. The ground is so hard that it can take up to three days to dig graves (hot coals are used to thaw the site) and it isn’t uncommon for complacent residents to accidentally freeze utensils to their body.
