You know how when you’re coming home from your vacation and you’re waiting for the conveyer to spit out your luggage, and you see a room labelled unclaimed baggage? According to the FAA, on average there’s 2.2 million people flying in the US every day, and there a good chance that some of their luggage never makes it home, or is ever claimed upon landing. Ever wonder what happens to lost and unclaimed luggage?
Well, according to the FAA, the airline is required to keep the baggage in storage for 90 days, in case of recovery by the owner. After that, they’re the airline’s property and they can do what they wish with it. Usually they sell it to one particular place.
