Out in the middle of the California desert, somewhere in between Niland and Calipatria, lies one of the last free zones in the world. Known as Slab City or The Slabs, it’s a free campsite and alternative living community, located on an old WWII base called Marine Barracks Camp Dunlap. It’s been called “The Last Free Place in America” and an endless Woodstock, and it’s the kind of place I’d love to just run off to.
There’s no running water, electricity, sewage or governmental oversight. It’s a refuge for people looking to escape, start fresh and find a welcoming community to get themselves back on their feet. As an unregulated squatter settlement, it’s kind of like the Wild West, but it’s also a chance for people to just live together in harmony and work together as a collective to look out for one another.
This, is the American Dream.
