It’s the year of television revivals, and NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt wants to bring back a slew of Emmy-winning shows.
First, Will & Grace will return on September 28 and pick up right where the show left off 11 years ago. The series finale showed Will and Grace meeting up years later with separate families, but the writers say they are going to pretend the finale never happened.
Of all the revivals on Greenblatt’s wishlist, The Office seems most likely to make a return. They could easily continue the story as it ended with Dwight as the regional manager. “I’ve talked to [the showrunner] four times over the past few years,” Greenblatt said. “It’s always, ‘Maybe some day but not now.’”
Greenblatt has talked to Tina Fey about a 30 Rock revival. As far as it actually happening goes, Fey told Greenblatt, “I don’t know, maybe.”
Aaron Sorkin to Greenblatt about a West Wing reboot: “You know I love that show and some day I’d love to revisit it, but it’s not going to happen right now.”
Greenblatt is also fighting to get ER back on the air. But the show’s head writer, John Wells, gave him “nothing concrete.”
Still, I would remain hopeful about these shows making a return. A ton of long lost favorites are resurfacing this year. Miami Vice is returning to NBC, Roseanne will return to ABC, Twin Peaks is on Showtime right now, American Idol is returning to a new home at ABC, Netflix is making another season of Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm comes back to HBO this fall, and even MTV is returning to its roots with a reboot of Total Request Live.
