I’ve come across a great many unexplainable phenomena and bizarre happenings scouring the internet over the past 8 years since I’ve worked at theCHIVE. So I’ll admit it’s rare when I actually get surprised at something that comes across my radar. But when I found this highly successful 26-year-old Brazilian artist, who founded the increasingly popular Malfeitona, a home studio providing what she describes in Portuguese as tatuagens peba (which literally translates to “trash tattoos”), I was dumbfounded to say the least. But it’s a brave and confusing new world, so I guess I should get used to embracing the horror.
In a nutshell, the tattoo “artist” uses her lack of any discernible skill to create tattoos that look like something out of a children’s daily doodle book. And incredibly, this amateur style has made a niche for herself as the creator of original, one-of-a-kind designs. Fernandes has become a viral hit off of her trademark rudimentary designs, and built a small, successful empire off the back of dozens of 5-star reviews from happy customers, as well as from her over 12 thousand Instagram followers.
So in summation, what the Hell do I know about this modern era? Art is subjective, right? Below is an assortment of the best (worst?) of this artist’s designs.
