On Sunday, a creative group of New Zealanders constructed an island made of sand in the Tairua estuary on the Coromandel Peninsula to avoid a drinking ban put into place over the New Year period.
Set up with a picnic table and ice chest for drinks the locals joked the island was in “international waters” and exempts from the drink ban. A group set up shop New Year’s Eve, to watch fireworks and drink. Locals said the island was still intact Monday morning.
