R. Lee Ermey, originally hired as a consultant, approached director Stanley Kubrick and demanded the role of Gunnery Sgt. Hartmann. He didn’t think any of the actors on set could do a good enough job. Kubrick at first declined, only relenting when Emery started berating him in character.
