The Blob (1958 & 1988)
This classic horror flick revolves around a collection of small towns who are being attacked by what is known as “The Blob.” This alien goo is making its way around eating anything and everything in sight, and people are shitting themselves.
The inspiration for this movie came from what is known as “The Star Jelly Case” in Pennsylvania in which 4 small town officers stumbled across this dome shaped blob of jelly that completely dissolved as soon as they tried to pick it up. What it wound up being was a substance known as “star jelly” that sometimes lands on earth during meteor showers.
The Entity (1982)
This early 80s horror movie focuses on the life of a woman who is attacked in her own home by a poltergeist. Classic, right?
It is based off of the real life events of Carla Moran, who was reportedly attacked more than a few times in her house by an invisible force. Even her son, Ethan, told reporters about how his arm was broken by something that clearly was not in the room. That was enough for Hollywood to jump all over it!
Jaws (1975)
One of the most famous movies on the list, Jaws is the movie that really put sharks on the map as far as “shit people are scared of.” The film follows three men who set sail to capture a great white that has been terrorizing the beaches during peak season.
The movie itself is based off of a terrifying 11-day incident on the Jersey Shore back in 1916 that saw 4 people killed and 1 person seriously injured.
The Amityville Horror (1979, 2005)
Another classic in its own right, this film follows a family who moves into a home that was the scene of some sketchy murders 13 months earlier, only to find that now the house itself is filled with ghosts and is pissed off.
This is based off of the actual story of Lutz Family who apparently went through some terrifying shit upon moving into the actual house i n 1975.
The Hills Have Eyes (1977, 2006)
This film follows a family who, after being stranded in the Nevada Desert, is terrorized by a fucked up family of cannibals.
This movie is based off of an actual family of cannibals in medieval Scotland who captured, killed, and ate over 1000 people.
The Conjuring (2013)
Easily one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen, this bad boy follows a family who moves into a house that is possessed by a bitch of a witch who likes to sacrifice kids.
This is based off of one of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s paranormal cases. Ed and Lorraine worked over 10,000 paranormal cases throughout their careers and have seen some shit, so it surely wasn’t too hard to make a movie out of one.
The Girl Next Door (2007)
Sadly, this isn’t the good version of The Girl Next Door but nonetheless it is a horror film based off of a true story. This film follows a girl who was tricked into babysitting some kids only to find herself captured and tortured by some sick bitch and sketchy kids.
This is based off of the true story of Sylvia Likens, who was tortured and murdered by Gertrude Baniszewski in 1965.
The Mothman Prophecies (2002)
This story follows a man who is searching for the legendary “Mothman.” After finding himself in a small town with zero recollection as to how he got there, he starts to experience more and more supernatural events.
The movie is based off of events that took place between November of 1966 and December of 1967 in West Virginia in which the people of Point Pleasant claimed to be seeing a giant Mothman that seemed to appear before big disasters.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Another classic in the horror genre, this film follows a group of friends who find themselves chased down by cannibals and leatherface, some sketch bast with a chainsaw.
The inspiration for leatherface in particular came from Ed Gein, perhaps one of the most famous serial killers in history.
The Strangers (2008)
This film tells us the story of a couple who spends the weekend in their vacation home only to be terrorized by three knife wielding mask wearing mother choders.
The film is based off of two specific events- the Manson family Tate murders, and the Keddie Cabin murders. Both involved break ins and killings that were simply eerie.
