Gamers have differing reasons for what drew them to the genre, but for most, it’s the ability to control an outcome. We play for a sense of autonomy, independence and to feel like we’re doing things we’re never gonna get to do (like stealing cars, joining a fighting tournament or being the goddamned Batman). But, the same software and codes that allow us to live out our fantasy, is also subject to hacking, cheating and piracy to get an unfair advantage or to profit off a game without paying a single penny.
Fortunately, the video game industry is both savvy and clever and have embedded codes in their software that punishes those that don’t colour within the lines of fair play. While not every cheater gets their punishment, there are enough folks out there getting a hilarious punishment that it makes it worth it.
