My Bill Murray Encounter (for those still paying attention)…

Every year theCHIVE is lucky enough to fly out to St. Augustine Florida for the Caddyshack Charity Pro-Am Tournament as theCHIVE is one of his official sponsors. Now I’ve SEEN Bill many times, and even been in earshot of the legend on numerous occasions. But to meet the man takes a courage I do not possess. Listen, I’m an anxious man, and what the Hell do I have to offer Bill conversationsally that he hasn’t heard a billion times before, right?

So as one of the event evenings wore on, after about my 5th beer of the night which I downed for much-needed liquid courage, Mac and I spotted Bill by himself for a brief moment and we decided to take our shot to say ‘Hello’. Mac quickly chimed in first likely saying something wild and nonsensical as he always did so effortlessly. But to be honest I can’t remember what Mac said because I was in a fugue state probably rehearsing in my head what I was about to say to Sir Bill when I had my chance.

Mac said his piece and then Bill turned his eyes towards me and I figured I’d introduce myself as Bob, and share with him that ever since I was a kid, nearly every other intro I make with other people ends with them cracking, “Oh, Like…’What About Bob?’”. I then quickly finished by stating to Bill, “So, for better or worse, I have you to thank for that”.

Bill smiled wryly as only he can and without skipping a beat retorted, “Well then, I guess I have some making up to do”.

I smiled. I thanked him quickly for the evening & “Everything” and then I floated away, hopefully, before he found me TOO annoying.

That’s it. That’s my Bill Story. It’s short, it’s sweet, it’s perfect…to me anyway.
