In French, there’s a phrase that translates to “cat cry” called cri-du-chat. It sounds light and innocent, almost silly even. But when it’s used in tandem with the word “syndrome,” there’s really nothing silly about it. Cri-du-chat syndrome, also known as 5p minus syndrome, is a chromosomal condition that results when a piece of chromosome 5 is missing. Infants with this condition often have a high-pitched cry that sounds like that of a cat…hence the name. That distinctive cry was one of the first things Amanda noticed about her daughter, Charlotte.
