In the early 2000s, an Army Sergeant Major had an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) soldier who had just lost both legs in an explosion. He was receiving treatment at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and had no family at his bedside. Only it wasn’t because they didn’t want to be there – it was because they couldn’t afford to be.
