Perspective is everything, and In a Violent Nature is one of the best examples of this axiom in motion.
If you boiled down In a Violent Nature to its most basic plot points, it would sound like the most generic slasher that you’ve ever seen. However, where this film and its writer-director Chris Nash decides to place its camera and center its story makes it one of the most interesting additions to the slasher genre in years, bolstered by beautiful cinematography, sparing sound design, and gut-wrenching prosthetic makeup effects.
In a Violent Nature feels like a Friday the 13th movie where the cameraman wandered away from the main cast of camp counselors to follow Jason for the entire runtime, playing like a slasher movie version of Noises Off. This slower-paced and methodical approach may test the patience of some horror fans, but I was enamored with it.
