When you think of great directors, chances are you think of the classic directors of the 1970s, people like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorcese, Francis Ford Coppola, and so on. Maybe if you’re a film geek like me, you think of all kinds of directors, maybe even some who’ve emerged in only the last 20 years or so like Christopher Nolan or the wave of directors that came out of the 1980s like James Cameron.
One of the directors I always think of is Rob Reiner.
With The Chivery’s “As You Wish” Coin Set out now, I decided now is the time to finally talk about how The Princess Bride is a part of one of the most unlikely string of great movies you can imagine. While Reiner’s career as a film director has seen its ups and downs (the movie that ended his streak, North from 1994, ended that streak for a reason), most directors would do unholy things to match his five-movie-run.
To be clear, all five of these were made in a row by Reiner. No breaks, no short films in between, nothing. The streak started in 1986…
